Discussion From an Independent Viewpoint

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

This issue is dedicated to my mother who passed away on April 26th, 2004. She was 98. May the memory of her life serve as a blessing for all of us.

Let me depart, for this issue, from strictly nutritional discussion, to mention some of the concepts which she instilled in me, ideas touching on mental health and the proper attitudes toward the good life.

The world is sick. Improper behavior abounds. Actions considered unacceptable, in previous generations, are now tolerated and even encouraged. Self-discipline hardly exists. People kill other people in the name of religion.

In order “to repair the world,” to make it well again, it is necessary to get back to basics. We must be re-educated to find greater meaning in life; to believe in a common ancestor, a Supreme Creator, a higher power than ourselves, who created the building blocks for our existence and put into humans a more highly developed cerebral cortex, the part of the brain which helps us to tell “right from wrong.”

The belief in the Creator is necessary, whether a person professes belief in an official religion or not, for it teaches us that all human beings are related to each other and must be treated with respect. This Supreme Entity directly created the elements from which came the one-celled and the many-celled plants and creatures, including us, that make up much of our planet. Since we have a common Creator, the object for human beings should be for all of us to learn to live together harmoniously. To achieve this, we should continue with the basics:

We must be educated to love our neighbors as ourselves, no matter what color, creed, gender or sexual orientation. We must be taught to never harm another person or group of people.

We must strive to add years to our lives, to be unselfish so that others will see how we conduct our lives and strive to emulate us. We must make a better world for the future generations than the way we have found it.

Don’t be selfish. Here are some examples of selfish behavior contrasted with unselfish acts:

1.Those who live for themselves without regard for others, spammers and hackers versus those who volunteer some of their leisure time at hospitals, nursing homes, religious institutions, schools, juvenile sports teams, youth organizations, etc.

2.Those in the film and television industry who promote blatant violence and sexual scenes versus those who promote films depicting family stability.

3.Those who promote criminal activity, the thief, rapist, abuser, adulterer or murderer people versus those who help to prevent crimes and help to re-educate toward civilized social behavior.

4. Those who are paid grossly excessive salaries versus those who give of their time and their finances to charitable institutions above what is expected of them.

5. Those who own or work in industries that pollute the environment and cause population to have ill health versus those who grow or distribute food that improves the physical and mental health.

6. Those who study and practice Science for its own sake rather than to improve the world we live in versus those who use Science to improve techniques of curing disease, without bringing harm to patients.

7. Those who encourage people to eat and drink substances that often promote ill health versus those who learn optimal nutrition, practice it and encourage others to do so.

            Save the trees.

Seize all guns and get rid of them, except those for law enforcement officers. Too many young people are being killed by illegal guns in schools and drive-by shootings. Make it illegal for gun and ammunition manufacturers to sell their products to anyone but police or army. Interpret the 2nd Amendment, that Congress shall not make any law preventing a militia to bear arms, not an individual. Strive for the elimination of war, here and overseas. Those who manufacture and sell arms to other countries to make war are selfish and should be encouraged to go into some other kind of making a living.

The prison population should be reduced by improving nutrition. Violence in movies and TV must be eliminated. Children imitate what they see around them. Violence is wrong. Negotiation is always the better way to go. We should continue to strive for the elimination of war, here and overseas.

            Don’t pollute.

            Enjoy life.

Stand up for what you think is right.

Don’t harm another individual or be cruel to animals.

            Don’t waste energy.

Use the back of computer or copy paper to recycle it again.

Turn lights off when not going back into the room.

We are eventually going to run out of fossil fuel. Develop turbines to create electricity which will utilize attic heat for air conditioning and heating. Solar powered hot water heaters and air conditioners should be subsidized. Discussion From an Independent Viewpoint

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

This issue will be devoted to some diseases which I have not mentioned in the other issues. They are:

Acne. Although acne can occur at any age, it is mostly a teenage skin disease of the face and the upper torso. Medical treatments vary widely, from ultraviolet light, laser, creams, ointments, soaps– everything except improving the diet, which is really the only way to treat it successfully. Following the ABC Diet, eliminating especially soft drinks, caffeine, sugar, fluorides, no more 17% of fat and no more than 17% of protein in the daily diet, eating 4 to 7 eggs a week, taking a good, medium strength, multiple vitamin and mineral preparation with an adequate amount of Vitamin A, biotin, lecithin and zinc, will go a long way toward clearing up acne forever.
Bedsores. These sores are usually found in very ill or elderly, bedridden patients who are unable to turn themselves from time to time, allowing for adequate circulation. In addition to turning the patients at least once an hour, the ABC Diet, with a high potency multiple vitamin and mineral formula, fruits or raw vegetables, or freshly squeezed fruits, freshly squeezed raw vegetables, or miso soup made from barley paste to provide exogenous enzymes, will help to prevent and treat this condition.
Burns. Locally, these can be treated with Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) oil, squeezed from the capsule, directly on the area and covering with a loose sterile dressing, changing the area several times a day. Giving the ABC Diet will promote growth of new skin and healing.
Other Skin diseases. Moles which are irregular in shape or which grow rapidly should be excised by a dermatologist or other skilled physician. Rashes should be examined for diagnosing of underlying diseases. Some rashes in small children, diagnosed by inexperienced physicians, have been called scabies, when they were the result of giving them tea or other caffeinated drinks. Following the ABC Diet definitely helps to prevent many skin diseases and acute illnesses.
A.I.D.S. (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), Venereal diseases, Herpes and Shingles.
These viral diseases can be prevented, to a large extent, by increasing the body’s resistance, or raising the immunity, to viral infection or invasion. Protected sex, not taking illicit drugs especially by non-sterile needles or inhalation, and following the ABC Diet, with added lysine, high potency multiple vitamin and minerals, CalMag, Vitamin E taken with butter, zinc and a large quantity of Vitamin C1000 Complex in divided doses. Painful symptoms of shingles in adults, caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox in children, can be reduced by taking extra large amounts of B Complex, Vitamin C1000 Complex, Vitamin E 400 with butter and zinc, all in divided doses. Always remember that no antibiotic can cure a virus; only large amounts of Vitamin C1000 Complex and some zinc can.
Allergies and Asthma. Following the ABC Diet goes a long way toward preventing symptoms. Vitamin C1000 Complex, B Complex and zinc also help.
Bursitis. Usually a painful shoulder or upper arm, can be helped by following the ABC Diet, taking Vitamin B6, Vitamin E 400 with butter at breakfast, extra Vitamin C1000 Complex,
Cerebral palsy. This is usually a congenital disease, as a result of brain damage at birth, either by an instrument delivery or an older mother giving birth for the first time. Partial remission of symptoms through following the ABC Diet may be achieved by improving nerve conduction. Adding B Complex, C, E, calcium, magnesium, zinc and manganese may help.
Colds and coughs, Emphysema. Colds and coughs can be prevented or minimized by following the ABC Diet and taking extra Vitamin C1000 Complex and zinc.
Constipation, Diarrhea, Nausea and Vomiting. These gastro-intestinal problems are usually dietary in nature. By following the ABC Diet, a built-in balance of fiber carbohydrates is present. Only when toxins, like food poisoning, are ingested, should these symptoms appear. A good multiple vitamin and mineral preparation plus Vitamin C and CalMag should then be taken to help detoxify the body.
Crohn’s Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. These are definitely cases in which the ABC Diet should always be followed, with fruits and raw vegetables taken in very small quantities as frequently as possible. These are inherited diseases, but with an excellent diet they can be controlled. A common way to treat them is to give cortisone to relieve the symptoms, but this is a no-no. Cortisone compounds damage the entire body, especially the endocrine gland system. Only for a short time should they ever be given, and only as an adjunct with nutritional therapy. The ABC Diet is the only real way to treat them successfully for a long period of time.
Hiatus hernia, the loss of muscle tone around the area of the hole where the esophagus passes from the chest into the stomach. By following the ABC Diet, eating very small quantities of fruit or raw vegetables, the elasticity of the muscle may be restored. Taking antispasmodics or antacids doesn’t solve the problem for more than a very short period of time.
S.I.D.S., S.A.D.S. Sudden Infant and Sudden Teenage Arrhythmia Death Syndromes are two conditions in which the ABC Diet can help. S.I.D.S. has been largely eliminated by putting the infant down to sleep on its back, rather than on the stomach. There are still some cases of it which are due to a lack of lecithin and biotin in the diet, the lecithin lack due to giving the baby cow’s milk instead of the mother’s milk from breast feeding.

In the case of S.A.D.S., however, the problem is a disorder of the electrical system of the heart, showing up on an electrocardiogram as an abnormally long QT interval. This appears to be caused by dysfunction of protein structures in the ion channels of the heart cells. The abnormality can be either acquired by taking certain medications, or inherited when a mutation causes the electrical recovery of the heart to be slower. Sudden death occurs after strenuous physical exertion, although it may happen upon waking from sleep.

My feeling is that by following the ABC Diet, both factors causing the abnormality can be largely prevented. Teenagers are known drinkers of coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate and sugar, and they brush their teeth with fluorides. This is also why A.D.H.D. is more prevalent in this age group than any other (see ISSUE #6). The ABC Diet encourages them to avoid using these substances and others which damage the body’s electrical system and chemical balance. Taking a good, medium strength, multiple vitamin and mineral preparation can maintain the body in good order.

ON HEALTH ISSUES
Discussion From an Independent Viewpoint

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE, (Premature Senility) the destruction of brain cells at a much earlier age, is characterized by progressive mental withdrawal of patients into their own secluded world. I consider Alzheimer’s Disease (A.D.), formerly a very rare disease, to be, potentially, an extremely serious health problem of the future, right up there near the top with A.I.D.S., heart disease and cancer. What has caused the senility of old age to be replaced by premature senility, being diagnosed as early as twenty-nine years of age, in the frequency of cases, or, putting it another way, why have we experienced a tremendous increase in the number of cases of A.D. in the past twenty years? I feel that it is due to the presence of three nutritional factors:

Aluminum derived from food produced under conditions of acid rain, from food cooked in aluminum vessels, from continued ingestion of antacids, and from absorption through the skin of antiperspirant deodorants.

Fluorides from toothpastes, mouthwashes, oral rinses, dental applications, some vitamin preparations which contain them and from drinking water. Fluoride tooth pastes became popular about thirty-five years ago; it has taken all this time for the number of cases of A.D. to become so numerous.

Poisonous substances, especially caffeine and nicotine which act as catalysts (to speed up chemical reactions.

The first two combine, in the presence of the third, to form aluminum fluoride, as in the chemical equations Al(OH)3 + 3 H+ + 3F- = 3H2O + Al+++ + 3F- ; then 2Al+++ + 3F2- = 2AlF3.

Aluminum fluoride migrates specifically to the brain, where it causes progressive twisting of nerve fibers and plaque deposits to take place during the course of the disease; such damage is easily observed in post mortem brain examination. It is my feeling that A.D. may be stopped from progressing further.

How do we help existing early cases of A.D.?

The nutritional deficiencies must be corrected through the use of the ABC Diet plus daily exercise and taking the high potency multiple vitamin and mineral preparation, one garlic oil capsule, two lecithin capsules and one Vitamin C1000 Complex tablet should be taken with each meal. Calcium and magnesium, in the form of CalMag, should be taken one hour after each meal to help detoxify and eliminate the aluminum.

How can we prevent future cases of A.D.?

By banning the use of aluminum and fluoride preparations, (it’s hard to find a toothpaste or mouthwash without fluoride these days) just as we did mercury compounds, phenacetin, sweet spirit of nitre, turpentine for internal use, chloroform, haarlem oil and other substances which were eliminated from the marketplace when their toxicity to the body was confirmed. Also, by discouraging the use of poisonous substances (caffeine and tobacco) in our lifestyle, we can do much to prevent further damage to the body. A non-aluminum antiperspirant, called Lavilin, is available at health food stores. It is made from flowers, and is effective as a deodorant-antiperspirant for seven to fifteen days per application. It inhibits the bacteria which causes underarm odor and, because it so vastly superior, I hope it will eliminate the use of all those products which contain aluminum chlorhydrate.

Aluminum-clad stainless steel cookware allows the heat-conducting property of aluminum to combine with the non-reactive property of stainless steel, a very satisfactory, efficient method of cooking food. The use of aluminum antacids has been more or less superceded by antibiotics which kill the particular bacterium which causes ulcers and by antacids which reduce gastric secretion.

The public must demand that their city and county officials stop adding fluoride to the drinking water supplies. If people take CalMag and Vitamin B6, while, at the same, eliminating sugar, in the form of cake, candy, cookies and Cokes from the diet, there will be no measurable increase in the incidence of dental caries.

The earlier that the ABC Diet is started upon diagnosis, the better will be the chances of preventing the further progression of A.D.. Counseling and improved nutrition together must be tried for six months to a year before abandoning efforts.

ON HEALTH ISSUES
Discussion From an Independent Viewpoint

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

This issue will be devoted to problems of the nervous system, the brain and the mind– pain, headache, migraine, facial pain, hypochondria, alcoholism and drug addiction, tendency toward suicide, schizophrenia, manic-depressive state (bi-polar), nervousness, depression, insomnia, anorexia nervosa, bulimia, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and senility. (ADHD has been discussed separately in ISSUE #6, and Alzheimer’s Disease will be discussed in ISSUE #14.)

Strangely enough, the most common cause of all these diseases is bad nutrition, or not following the concepts of the ABC Diet. When junk food is consumed, the first system affected is the nervous system, long before the physical manifestation of a disease appears. The occurrence of mental problems should immediately tell our physicians and ourselves that improper nutrition has been going on. At that point, we should be instructed on how to improve the diet, in addition to being warned about the dangers of further consuming junk food.

What are the elements of a good diet which are destroyed by junk fund? The vitamins of the B Complex group– thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), choline, inositol, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), biotin, folate and cyanocobalamin (B12)– along with Vitamin C, are the water-soluble vitamins; that is, they dissolve in water. Because the B Vitamins and C dissolve in water, they tend to be washed out from the body by diuretics, those chemicals which increase the flow of fluids out of the body through the kidneys.

What are the effects of Vitamin B Complex and C?

B1–regulate the heart and other muscles of the body, is necessary for proper digestion, especially carbohydrates, and for the functioning of nerve tissue, providing energy by helping to use sugars properly. B1 is deactivated in the presence of antacids, causing numbness of the fingers. Eating white rice only can cause a disease called beri-beri, if no other source of B1 is present.
B2–needed to break down carbohydrates and proteins into substances the body can use at the cellular level. A deficiency will show sore, cracked lips and loss of eyesight through development of glaucoma and cataracts. A lack may also result in bedsores in inert patients. People who take phenothiazine-derivative tranquilizers often show B2 deficiency symptoms.
B3– stimulate the blood flow throughout the body besides preventing pellagra, which affects the skin, gastrointestinal tract and nervous system. It is used to lower the blood serum cholesterol and deposits in the walls of blood vessels. It has also been used in large quantities in treating arthritis, schizophrenia and senility.
B5– essential to the manufacture of the 45 hormones of the adrenal cortex, including cortisol, which relieves inflamation. It also aids the body in utilizing fats, carbohydrates and proteins, helps to regulate blood sugar, serving to modify diabetes, hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. It enhances, along with Vitamins B6 and C, to prevent and treat infections.
B6–also called the anti-nausea or anti-dizziness vitamin because of its action on the specific areas of the brain and the inner ear to prevent these symptoms. It is effective in treating Meniere’s Disease. Women who become pregnant, take estrogens or birth control pills, need this vitamin in greater quantity. Acts as a diuretic in preventing premenstrual tension and bloating. Helps to prevent Herbeden’s nodes on the fingers of arthritic patients. It is the only effective non-surgical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. Vitamin B6 is needed to break down proteins into amino acids. Tryptophan, an amino acid, needs Vitamin B6 to be metabolized. Methionine cannot be broken down beyond homocysteine (a toxic by-product appearing in atherosclerosis and other heart diseases) to a harmless, non-toxic end product without an adequate amount of B6. It helps to prevent nausea when chemotherapy is given, to prevent B6 deficient deterioration in alcoholics, prevents and dissolves gallstones, bladder stones and kidney stone, helps Vitamin A to eliminate acne, assists A and C in fighting infections, helps prevent tooth decay, aids in the manufacture of lecithin from choline and inositol, thereby lowering cholesterol levels and preventing heart attacks, and it helps iron to be utilized in the manufacture of red blood cells.
Folate–essential in preventing macrocytic or megaloblastic anemia. It is important in manufacturing red blood cells, preventing and treating severe depression, senility and mental retardation, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, treating suspected spinal cord injuries, spina bifida, mouth and leg ulcers, aiding in slow wound healing, and decreasing the susceptibility of infants to illness by administering sufficient amounts of it to pregnant women. Folate is responsible for normal cell division.
Biotin–important in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. A deficiency may cause trouble in the form of poor growth, skin problems, diabetes, nerve problems including depression, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, muscular cramps and various sexual gland disorders. Nursing mothers who have insufficient biotin in their diet, pass the deficiency on to their offspring, thus causing seborrheic dermatitis and desquamative erythroderma in the infants. The use of antibiotics in cattle and poultry to ward off disease and increase yield, has decreased the amount of biotin available from beneficial intestinal bacteria.
Choline and inositol–With the help of a liver enzyme and Vitamin B6, these two B vitamins form lecithin, which prevents and removes cholesterol and plaque buildup in the walls of blood vessels and, with the aid of unsaturated oils such as safflower oil, reduces serum cholesterol significantly. This reduction would be extremely helpful, in conjunction with the ABC Diet and exercise, in heart disease and in cases of diminished blood supply to the brain due to clogged arteries, thus making it useful in preventing stroke and various diseases of senility. Lecithin would also help in circulatory problems of the kidneys, prostate, uterus and limbs. These two B vitamins are important factor in treating liver diseases, reducing fatty infiltration of the liver and treating cirrhosis and amyloidosis. They inhibit certain cancers, help to repair or prevent nerve damage in muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy. Choline is the essential ingredient of acetylcholine, the substance transmitting the impulse from the nerves to the muscles which stimulate the latter to contract. Indeed, it may be the lack of acetylcholine, due to the lack of choline in the diet, which may be responsible for the vast increase of these nerve disorders. Lack of inositol may cause insomnia and speed up the process of balding. Both of these B vitamins play an important part in the functioning and repair of both the liver and the kidneys. In conjunction with the ABC Diet and exercise, they may well prevent the increasing need of dialysis and kidney transplants. Finally, I recommend mother’s breast milk because it contains lecithin, and cow’s milk does not. The choline is helpful in establishing babies’ immune systems, protecting them against disease.
PABA– enables folic acid and B6 to be used, helps proteins to break down into amino acids, assists in the production of red blood cells, helps to prevent or relieve sunburn, helps, along with the ABC Diet, in the treatment of a skin disease called vitiligo, which is characterized by loss of pigmentation over increasingly larger areas of the skin.
B12– helps to prevent pernicious anemia, increase energy, aid growth and appetite in children and maintain the nervous system.
All these B vitamins are most effective if taken together, called Vitamin B Complex. Skin diseases such as lichen planus or tinea versicolor are successfully treated by the B Complex, provided that the ABC Diet is adhered to.
Vitamin C– necessary to maintain body cells, connective tissue, blood vessels, wound and burn healing, along with resistance and recovery from infectious disease. It serves, along with calcium, to protect us from harmful substances in our environment, such as heavy metals, tobacco, alcohol, solvents, insect sprays, toxic chemicals, excessive sunshine, and side effects from drugs such as aspirin, cortisone, anticonvulsants, pyschotherapeutic agents, sulfa and antibiotics. C helps to strengthen tooth enamel, converts blood sugar into energy, helps to prevent blood clots in the heart, lungs and brain, and it helps to prevent gall bladder, kidney and urinary bladder trouble. C also helps the utilization of iron in the manufacture of hemoglobin, strengthens the entire endocrine gland system, including the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, adrenal and sex glands. In this manner we are guarded against diabetes, obesity, cancer, impotence, stunted growth, arthritis and many other diseases. C relieves the symptoms of colds and cough if given in large doses immediately upon the onset of symptoms. Vitamin C should always be taken with other members of the C Complex family, namely, hesperidin, bioflavonoids, rutin and acerola, because these help to prevent capillary fragility in the blood vessels, including stroke, heart disease, aneurysms, phlebitis, hemorrhoids, broken blood vessels in the eyes, arms or legs due to cortisone therapy and leukemia.

What diuretics are found most commonly associated with the body? Water, drinks which contain caffeine and certain drugs which are used in the treatment of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. People, because of “scientific studies” which never were done, have been programmed into thinking that they must drink 8 glasses of water a day. This much water, even if caffeinated drinks and diuretic drugs were not used, would be more than enough to cause the water-soluble vitamins, found in food or in a supplement, to be washed out of the body before they have the opportunity to nourish it. Secondly, if coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, hydrochlorthiazide and other drugs are taken, there is a strong diuretic action, again prematurely ridding the body of the water-soluble vitamins. When caffeine drinks are taken, the diuretic action can remain in the body for as much as four days, starving the cells of proper nutrition.

What minerals are destroyed by junk food? Magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, chromium, copper, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, iodine, selenium and sulfur. What are the uses of these minerals and the harmful results to the body that occur with a deficiency of each of them?

Magnesium– lack of magnesium-based enzyme systems, resulting in hundreds of problems in the body, including the enzymatic breakdown of carbohydrates and proteins in digestion; dental decay; gall stones, bladder stones and kidney stones. If alcohol is consumed, five times as much magnesium is excreted from the body compared to water, which can lead to heart attacks, coronary thrombosis, tremors, nervousness, diarrhea, nausea, sleeplessness and bad dreams. If calcium is supplemented, or large quantities of milk products are consumed, without supplementing half as much magnesium, the same problems can occur (see ISSUE # 9) due to more magnesium being excreted than it should.
Calcium– used with Vitamin C and PABA to protect the skin against sunburn and certain skin cancers. With magnesium, Vitamin D and phosphorous, in the right proportions, calcium builds healthy bones and teeth and prevents osteoporosis. With magnesium it helps to maintain the integrity of the heart and blood vessels. With Vitamins B6, C and E, it enables iron to be used in red blood cells. With zinc, it helps to maintain enzyme systems including pancreatic and reproductive function. With magnesium, B Complex, C and D it relieves symptoms of pre-menstrual tension, nervousness, insomnia and headache. With Vitamins C and E, it relieves muscular cramps in the legs, finger tremors and bone pain in the neck and back. With lecithin, safflower oil, Vitamins B complex and C, calcium helps to reduce cholesterol and plaque deposits in the blood vessels– provided that the poisonous substances in the “A” group of the ABC Diet have been deleted from the diet. Remember that when calcium is supplemented, half as much magnesium must also be supplemented, as in CalMag tablets, and an above average multiple vitamin and mineral preparation containing Vitamins A, B Complex, C, D and E must also be taken.
Iron– when taken with Vitamins B Complex, C, E, calcium, copper, molybdenum and cobalt, it serves as the main substance in red blood cells which transports oxygen from the lungs to all other parts of the body, including the skin, other organs and muscles. Iron is poorly absorbed in the absence of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, or in the presence of antacids or other alkaline material, coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, tobacco and alcohol.
Zinc– enhances the action of Vitamins A, B Complex, C and E and the minerals manganese and selenium, makes up part of the molecule of many enzyme systems needed by the body for proper digestion, breathing, liver metabolism, pancreatic function and proper maintenance of both the male and female reproductive system. Sufficient intake of zinc, along with listed the vitamins and minerals, would reduce the number of glaucoma, cataract, hysterectomy and prostatectomy operations presently being performed. Drinking alcohol and preparations containing caffeine causes the excessive excretion of zinc, as well as magnesium, causing fatigue; depression; loss of sense of taste, smell, appetite, sight and hearing ; sterility; poor growth; body odor; stretch marks; white spots in the fingernails; atherosclerosis; sickle cell crisis; juvenile and adult diabetes; cancer; A.I.D.S, acrodermatitis enteropathicand slow healing. However, an excess of zinc can cause a loss of copper from the body, resulting in an anemia due to incomplete iron metabolism. Conversely, too much copper in the body can cause a zinc deficiency. Taking an excess of calcium can block zinc absorption, resulting in the conditions listed above.
Chromium and copper– act with insulin in the area of the glucose metabolism of carbohydrates, in amino acid metabolism of proteins, and in the fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis in fat metabolism. These two minerals are in short supply in our diet because of the high consumption of products containing white flour and sugar, so they should be supplemented, in addition to following the ABC Diet, in order to prevent high blood sugar (diabetes) and high blood pressure (hypertension). A chronic lack of chromium can cause stunted growth in children, mental retardation and general weakness in adults.
Potassium– an element found inside every cell, regulates water balance in the body. A deficiency can be caused by intake of alcohol, refined sugar, coffee, tea, soft drinks, excessive salt, diarrhea or vomiting, thiazide diuretics, and cortisone therapy. This results in irregular heartbeat, loss of muscle motor control, diabetes, allergies, high blood pressure, heart conditions, impaired brain function and dry skin. However, too much potassium can result in loss of sensation in the arms and legs, paralysis, mental confusion, weakness, heaviness of the legs, a fall in blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. If the diet is well-balanced, including fruits such as oranges and bananas, and green leafy vegetables and unpeeled potatoes, we will receive sufficient potassium for proper body functioning.
Phosphorous– stored in the teeth and the bones, this mineral is necessary for the utilization of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, for muscular contraction, metabolism of certain B Complex vitamins and for hormone production. Aluminum and magnesium antacids, excessive iron and refined sugar interfere with the proper absorption and utilization of phosphorous. Protein foods such as meat, eggs and nuts are rich in it. Eliminating eggs from the diet can lead to insufficient phosphorous intake, upset of the calcium-phosphorous ratio (2.5:1), leading to such diseases as arthritis, dental problems, rickets, osteoporosis and osteomalacia, unwanted weight loss, nervousness and weakness. Without eggs, the serum cholesterol level will still remain high, unless lecithin and Vitamin B6 are added to the diet.
Manganese– plays an important role in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, in proper nerve function and bone development, muscle coordination, and utilization of certain vitamins and hormones. It is used, along with Vitamin A and selenium, in reducing eye pressure in glaucoma. A lack of manganese may lead to diseases in which there is loss of muscle motor co-ordination, such as multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, back pains and disk trouble. Adhering to the ABC Diet and taking sufficient manganese will often help to relieve many of these conditions.
Iodine– plays an important role in metabolism. It is indispensable in the normal-functioning thyroid gland because it makes up an integral part of the hormone thyroxine. This hormone is responsible for proper energy level, growth rate, mental and speech ability, metabolism regulating fat deposition. A lack of iodine, characterized by retarded physical and mental development called cretinism, also causes arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), rapid pulse, heart palpitation, nervousness, obesity and slowed metabolism. Iodine was used by Max Gerson, M.D., in curing cancer patients. He discovered that table salt encourages the growth of cancer and iodine represses it. The age of highly salted “fast foods” seems to back him up– statistically, cancer has gone up from one in twenty-five deaths to one in three, just in the past fifty years or so.
Selenium– this is a mineral that has anti-oxidant properties. It works, in conjunction with vitamins A, C and E to help prevent premature aging and cancer, particularly breast cancer. With manganese, A and C, it helps to prevent cataracts. By supplementing this mineral in small amounts or eating bran and wheat germ, one can prevent certain undesirable oxidative reactions from occurring in the body, such as hardening of the arteries, prostatic enlargement, diseased female reproductive organs, liver damage and poor vision or blindness due to cataracts.
Sulfur– needed by the body to maintain healthy nails, skin, hair, carbohydrate and protein metabolism, proper emulsifying of fats, provide natural defense against bacterial infection, and to prevent or treat acne, scabies and other skin conditions. By eating enough protein foods, such as beef, dried beans, nuts and fish, we can get sufficient sulfur to satisfy our body needs.

So, the rewards of following the ABC Diet plus exercise, are often the prevention and successful treatment of pain, headache, migraine, facial pain, hypochondria, alcoholism and drug addiction, suicide, schizophrenia, manic-depressive state (bi-polar), nervousness, depression, insomnia, anorexia nervosa, bulimia, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and senility.

The present-day use of drugs in treating these conditions without following the ABC Diet is almost valueless. I have seen many adult boarding homes where patients are given large daily doses of psychotherapeutic drugs to keep them under control without really improving their conditions. These patients are chronic high users of caffeinated soft drinks and cigarettes.

Indeed, the success of tranquilizers and mood-elevator drugs, created by large drug manufacturers, lies in their ability to simulate the effects of the B Complex vitamins without being able to heal the conditions for which they are used. Many times the manufacturers, in order to get their product approved by the F.D.A., make multiple clinical tests using these drugs and publish only the results of those tests which may prove more effective than the placebo. I call this deception and contrary to what Science should be doing to promote healing.

The secret of successfully treating all these diseases of the nervous system is to begin treatment with the ABC Diet plus exercise immediately upon diagnosis. The cost of supplementing large doses of B Complex, C, and E vitamins and certain minerals to treat these ailments is minuscule in comparison to the current high cost of using largely ineffective drugs. Psychotherapy will still be necessary in many of these conditions, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, alcoholism and drug addiction, tendency toward suicide, schizophrenia and bi-polar disease, but the results utilizing the ABC Diet will be far more successful.

The main problem is persuading physicians to get patients to follow the ABC Diet and use the vitamins and minerals in therapeutic doses. Both caffeine and sugar addictions are difficult to cure, but cure them we must, to prevent and successfully treat mental and physical diseases.

By drastically reducing sugar consumption, and using CalMag and Vitamin B6, we will reduce dental decay, thus negating the need for fluorides in toothpaste, rinses and mouthwashes, which will, in turn, reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s Disease, hypoglycemia and many others. Then toothpaste manufacturers will once again make safe products which clean teeth and don’t contain fluorides, a step in the right direction toward preventing and curing disease.

Discussion From an Independent Viewpoint

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

African Americans suffer from health problems quite different from other Americans. Although there is no doubt that there is a hereditary factor associated with some of these health problems, it is my belief that most of these stem from bad dietary habits. Therefore, if the diet is improved, the health can be considerably improved.

SICKLE CELL DISEASE is an example of an almost exclusively African American disease. The 50,000 or more people who inherit this trait have blood cells which, instead of being round, are, at times, shaped like a sickle– narrowed in shape, unable to transport nutrition properly around the body. Other terms associated with this disease are Sickle Cell (S.C.) Disease and S.C. Crisis, depending upon the symptoms or severity of the disease. Some people who have the factor never suffer the debilitating anemia caused by excessive red cell destruction and often necessitating blood transfusions; nor the severe stomach pain and vomiting or the leg cramps and chronic ulcers around the ankles, characterized by the disease. Others constantly or sporadically suffer. Few with moderate or severe symptoms live beyond the age of forty.

Since the inherited factor is present in all patients with the disease, why do some suffer, in varying degrees, or don’t suffer, from the disease? If a study were to be made of these patients, I believe there would be found a definite correlation between poor dietary choices and severity of the disease. Those with the factor who reside in Africa almost never suffer the anemia and other symptoms when their diet consists of yams, seeds and other natural foods which prevent the sickling from occurring. This is not the case of those who eat a typical poor, American diet, heavy on sugar, starches, caffeine, alcohol and other chemicals, and who smoke tobacco.

How can we help to prevent S.C. Crisis from occurring? By re-educating those who have the S.C. trait to avoid eating, drinking and smoking those substances which bring on the disease. Following the ABC Diet will help considerably. Eating the seeds of apricot, peach, pear and apple trees can also help to prevent the crisis. The combination of “soda water” and cigarettes is particularly deadly, as it is with most other chronic diseases affecting humanity.

HEART DISEASE, KIDNEY DISEASE, CANCER AND DIABETES– HOW THEY AFFECT AFRICAN AMERICANS. Those who have these diseases tend to have them more severely than the population at large. This is partly true because of our American health care delivery system, where those who can afford to pay, tend to have better care than those who do not. Another part of the truth is that the diet and lifestyle of the average African American is much less healthy than the diet of the whites and Orientals. By the time they reach the physician or clinic for diagnosis of a disease, the affected body structures have deteriorated to such an extent that the prognosis is much less favorable. Physicians and nutritionists can only do so much to rebuild and repair a body that is falling apart, years before it should. Heart disease, or rather the better term for it, cardiovascular disease, involves all the blood vessels of the body. When, through poor diet, all the artery walls become blocked and hardened, not enough nutrients are transported around the body to feed the organs. Blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels rise to abnormally high levels; understand that these items are indicators of a diseased system, not diseases themselves. Therefore, it is of little value to prescribe drugs which lower the indicators without correcting the diet which caused all the problems to begin with.

In the case of kidney disease, a poor diet, consisting of high quantities of pork, soft drinks, chocolate, alcohol and other drugs, with such small amounts of fruits and vegetables as to make their value insignificant, will damage the kidneys beyond repair. Often the only solution is to put the patient on dialysis or replace one or both kidneys. The same is true for cancer. The poor diet just described damages both the liver and the pancreas, causing the body to self-destruct because insufficient amounts of satisfactory nutrition to keep the body in reasonably good health are present.

Diabetic symptoms round out the list of indicators of a poor diet. As explained in Issue #10, the pancreas is made up of the islets of Langerhans which make insulin to process carbohydrates and prevent the damaging high blood sugar levels; and the pancreolytic enzymes, manufactured elsewhere in the pancreas, which serve to digest reasonable amounts of animal protein and protect the body from cancer. Both areas respond favorably to good nutrition and are destroyed by poor nutrition.

It is not unusual for a sick body to demonstrate multiple disease symptoms. For example, diabetes with cancer, diabetes with cardiovascular problems, and so on. To make the symptoms go away for an extended period of time, prescribing drugs is not the answer unless the nutrition is greatly improved to correct the underlying condition of bad nutrition.

The last problem to be discussed in this issue is CRIME. Crime can best be explained as wrong actions against the society in which we live. It is not an understatement to say that inner city African American kids don’t have much of a chance to succeed under present conditions.

It is necessary to explain, in great detail, why this is so. For this we must explain the sociology (the study of the development, organization and problems of the society) of the African American population in the United States. Brought to the United States, beginning in 1619, from Africa where they were kidnapped and imprisoned, they were transported on slave ships to America, the men and women served in the South as slaves, living on plantations, working in the fields of cotton and tobacco or taking care of their masters’ houses.

They were not allowed to marry; consequently, many of them never knew who their fathers were. There was no family unit of a father and mother striving to make a living and raising their children with love and with discipline together, with the loyalty, devotion and maturity that goes with it. Adult males were known as “boys,” because, to recognize them as adult men meant that they were equal to their masters instead of chattel, items of movable property. Frequently, the males were sold to other plantations, to be moved elsewhere.

Almost two hundred fifty years later, the Civil War of 1861-1865 came and went. The slaves were freed, but having gained their freedom, they were never taught to establish these family units where husband and wife built a solid, caring, loving, mature, monogamous relationship, where bringing children up, with love, discipline and example-setting was a joint venture.

Today is 2004, and the vast majority still have not been taught this relationship– they still have the same “slave mentality.” Females are impregnated by their temporary male lovers, and both of them go their separate ways. It is not considered a shame to have a child out of wedlock. Men brag about their virility and their offspring, never even considering that bringing a child into the world is an ongoing responsibility of support and nurturing of the body and the mind. Without parents who live and act together to teach them right from wrong, they take their cues from the peer groups that surround them, whose upbringing also did not include parents who taught them right from wrong.

The children resent not only those who they feel “are keeping them down,” but also their parents whose discipline and love was never there for them. They begin with little crimes, such as petty theft and stealing cars for joyrides, then extortion and taking and selling drugs to which they become addicted, and finally progress to bank robbery and murder. Innocent children and adults are brutally murdered in or near their own homes. Youngsters cry out for discipline and stability-training in life, and not having found it in their families or the outside world, commit serious crimes and are put into prisons, where they do find a sort of negative discipline and stability. When they are released after serving their time, they resort to their old ways and are imprisoned again. At no point does society attempt to restructure their thinking processes, their attitudes toward behaving in a proper, civilized manner. It is not only the fault of the children as much as it is of the non-parents who have brought them into the world, who in turn, were also brought into the world and raised under essentially the same circumstances.
In order to improve the world, what is necessary is to change what exists, so that future generations will be freed from the “slave mentality,” and the world will be a safer, more orderly place in which to live. How?

Young adults must be taught that mature, loving, marital stability, not short-term passion, is the prerequisite for having children and raising them, together, under one roof. Their children, from infancy to teen age must be taught to “Honor and respect their father and mother;” Also, that their own lives have great value. They can succeed if they follow the rules of civilized life, not the rules of the street.

They should be informed that just because manufacturers pay to advertise their products on billboards, on television and the radio, doesn’t make them fit for human consumption; they should avoid items which cause them harm.

Manufacturers of unhealthy items, such as soft drinks, coffee, tea, alcohol and others mentioned in Issue #2, should be forced to foot the bill for the re-education process, to teach proper nutrition in order to prevent diseases, and to pay the medical expenses caused by using their products, much as the tobacco companies have been brought to task in recent years.

Finally, wealthy benefactors should sponsor the continued education of children through college so that they can improve their lives and raise themselves above the conditions into which they were born.

The alternative is building bigger and more expensive prisons for warehousing difficult people and living in a more violent society where no one is really safe. This does not paint a very pretty picture and does not have to be the choice, when re-education can go a long way, and at a lower price, to solving the physical and mental problems of a sizable portion of our population.

While we’re examining the problems of African Americans, we should bear in mind that whites, Latinos and Orientals are increasingly having the same problems due to the escalating divorce rate and consuming more junk food than ever before. The problems of today’s African Americans, though not due to the same causes, mirror the problems of the American people as a whole.

= = = = = = = = = = = = =
Summary of the ABC Diet. (For a complete explanation, see ISSUE #2.)

“A” for Avoiding chemical poisons normally considered harmless but which are really harmful:
coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, tobacco, alcohol, legal and illegal drugs, artificial sweeteners, coloring agents, preservatives, flavoring agents, white flour, fluorides, sugar, and more than a small amount of salt.

“B” for Be Sure to Eat some raw, uncooked vegetables or fruit, with each meal, in addition to cooked vegetables or fruits. Should eat whole grains cereals, brown organic rice, wheat, barley, oats, corn, beans, legumes, peas, seeds and nuts. May also eat some whole grain wheat bread, and pasta. Although they do have some fat and protein, the above are considered CARBOHYDRATES, the major source of energy for the body.

Up to, but not more than one-sixth of the daily calories may come from FATS, such as butter and oils from palm, coconut, olive, sunflower, soybean. Fats are important raw materials for many endocrine hormones, including male and female hormones, and cholesterol for healthy nails, skin and hair. Fats also serve as an extra energy source and transport Vitamins A, D, E and K around the body to where they are needed.

No more than one-sixth of the daily calories may come from PROTEIN, which may be from animal sources, such as red meat, fish, eggs, milk and cheese, or from vegetable sources, such as soy protein or a blend of pea, rice, or potato protein, rice bran, corn bran, apple and oat fiber, mushroom extract and other ingredients. Proteins serve as building blocks for the body.

Fortunately for the body, where good nutrition is present and through chemical processes, carbohydrates, fats and proteins may be transformed into each other when needed. Enzymes, mostly made up of protein, are catalysts, substances which help chemical reactions to be created or speeded up by providing a substance which itself is not changed in the process. In order to digest proteins, the enzymes pepsin, trypsin, pancreolytic and certain liver enzymes must be present. We must eat fresh sources of enzymes, found mostly in raw vegetables and fresh fruit, on a daily basis, to enable the body to do its job of living– pumping blood, breathing, thinking, moving, digesting, excreting, and so on.

“C” for Complementing (or supplementing) the diet with the correct supplement, or supplements, to prevent or postpone disease, or to modify a disease of which we show symptoms.

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

The pancreas, part of the digestive tract, is divided into two parts, the pancreolytic cells and the beta cells, also known as the islets of Langerhans. In Issue #5 we discussed the role of the pancreolytic cells in protein digestion and the disease of cancer.

In this issue we will explain the role of the islets of Langerhans in carbohydrate metabolism. Carbohydrates, as discussed in Issue #2, are classified as sugars, starches and fiber. Simple carbohydrates include fructose, galactose, lactose, maltose, sucrose and honey, each containing one or two sugars in the molecule. Simple carbohydrates which have vitamins and minerals are found in vegetables, fruits and milk products. Those which do not have vitamins and minerals, called refined or processed sugars, are found in table sugar, cake, candy, syrups and soft drinks. They are called “empty calories” and can lead to weight gain or, ultimately, obesity.

Complex carbohydrates, those with three or more sugars in the molecule, also called starches, include bread, cereal, starchy vegetables, legumes, rice and pasta. Complex carbohydrates usually release the sugar more slowly, in the process of digestion and absorption. Too much carbohydrate leads to obesity; too little leads to increased intake of fats or proteins to make up the total calorie intake, a very dangerous measure. I recommend that about 66% of total caloric intake should be from carbohydrates, preferably from starches, whole grains, beans, peas, seeds and nuts; and from naturally occurring sugars– fruits and vegetables. The balance of calories should come from fats (17%) and protein (17%).

The purpose of the islets of Langerhans, in conjunction with certain liver enzymes, is to manufacture insulin, which processes sugars. The normal functioning is called glucose metabolism. When there is a malfunction of these cells, sugars cannot be processed properly, and the disease is called diabetes. Diabetes can be broken down into two kinds, called Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is generally known as juvenile diabetes and is generally diagnosed in infancy or early childhood. Some believe that it is caused by a lack of zinc in the diet during the period of pregnancy, leading to the lack of development of the islets of Langerhans. In true Type 1, the patient must have daily insulin injections to survive. In recent years, Medicine is attempting, with some measure of success, to transplant healthy islets into certain Type 1 diabetics.

Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult onset diabetes, can be divided into two kinds– the gradual cessation of insulin production by the beta cells, and insulin resistance which involves not only the beta cells but also each cell of the body. In this type, the cells become resistant to insulin, thus preventing the normal breakdown of sugar in the cells where it is utilized as energy. Type 2 diabetes is treated by taking tablets, known as oral hypoglycemic agents, or by taking daily insulin injections. Some people are able to control their condition to a certain extent by eating low carbohydrate diets, but this means that they must increase their fat and/or protein intake above what the body can utilize safely (see Issue #2).

It is known that being overweight or obese puts a heavy strain on the beta cells to manufacture insulin because of the added amounts of sugars that are eaten. Conversely, some overweight diabetics have been known to reduce their need for injected insulin or oral hypoglycemic tablets by reducing their weight.

What does not appear to be known is that Type 2 diabetes can be treated by taking certain vitamins and minerals which appear to be lacking in the diet.

Why are they lacking? Because either they are no longer found in the food we eat, or they are excreted from the body before they have the opportunity to nourish the various organs, including the pancreas. By eating significant amounts of refined or processed sugars, found in table sugar, cake, candy, cookies, syrups and soft drinks, which have no vitamins, minerals or other nutrients in them, people drastically reduce the amount of fruits, vegetables and other foods that do contain these nutrients.

How are they excreted before they have the opportunity to nourish the various organs? By taking diuretics, substances which excrete fluids from the body, found in some high blood pressure medicines, drinking large quantities of water, fruit or vegetable juices, or caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, soft drinks or chocolate. (Remember that “decaffeinated” beverages still contain a certain amount of caffeine, enough to do harm. Also remember that green tea contains caffeine and is therefore also harmful.)

No one, except me, has called attention to the fact that because the pancreas has two separate areas which are used in the process of metabolism and yet can become diseased (diabetes and cancer) if not properly nourished. Similarly, the same vitamins and minerals are used to nourish both areas. These are Vitamins A, B Complex, C and E, and the minerals zinc, chromium and copper. Once diabetes has been diagnosed, it is important to follow the ABC Diet, supplementing it with a high potency vitamin and mineral tablet or capsule, such as Daily One Capsule by Twinlab, Inc., or a similar product, to help reverse the disease.

Two disease conditions similar to diabetes are hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). They can often be treated successfully by following the ABC Diet.

I am reminded that, during my career as a pharmacist, an eight year-old female client suddenly became ill with hypoglycemia. The only thing that changed in her lifestyle was that, a month before, her physician had prescribed a daily vitamin-fluoride tablet. I reminded the doctor that fluorides can cause hypoglycemia, so he immediately discontinued the tablet. I recommended a suitable vitamin and mineral preparation in addition to the ABC Diet, and within six months, her hypoglycemia disappeared.

If hypoglycemia can be caused by fluoride usage, then this is one more reason that no one should ever use fluoridated drinking water, fluoride tooth paste or mouthwashes, electing instead to eliminate simple sugars from the diet, which weaken dental enamel, and eat sufficient quantities of food or supplements containing magnesium and Vitamin B6, which strengthen dental enamel and prevent cavities.

Finally, there is one more disease typically known as Type 1 diabetes which develops during the early teens, and which most often is treated by daily insulin injections. Since insulin had been manufactured up to the teens, is it not possible, by following the ABC Diet with a high potency vitamin and mineral supplement, that the beta cells will, once again, be nourished sufficiently to manufacture insulin again? I think it’s worth a try.

= = = = = = = = = = = = =
Summary of the ABC Diet. (For a complete explanation, see ISSUE #2.)

coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, tobacco, alcohol, legal and illegal drugs, artificial sweeteners, coloring agents, preservatives, flavoring agents, white flour, fluorides, sugar, and more than a small amount of salt.

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

What is osteoporosis? It is the condition where more calcium is pulled out of the bones than is absorbed into the bones, resulting in the bones becoming more and more porous. If this is allowed to continue through life, a bone, usually the hip bone or an arm or a leg, will break, and the patient will fall. It has been debated as to whether the patient falls as a result of the broken bone, or whether the bone breaks as the result of the fall. I believe the former to be correct.

Other causes of osteoporosis are the use of steroids, such as prednisone or cortisone; the lack of, or the inability to, exercise; smoking, hormone therapy for more than three years, or the excessive use of alcohol.

What is most often believed is that there is a lack of calcium in the diet. Usually this is not so. When a bone scan is taken, the quantity of calcium is measured. If the scan shows less bone density than what is considered to be normal, the tendency for doctors is to prescribe calcium in relatively large amounts, in the form of milk products or oral calcium tablets, or, most often, a drug called Fosfamax, which has side effects. There are significant dangers in taking calcium alone, which I will describe in the next few paragraphs.

The average, poor diet, consisting of junk foods, excessive protein and fat, coffee, tea and soft drinks, prevents calcium utilization in the body by increasing the phosphorous and lowering the calcium levels in the liquid portion of the blood. Lower back trouble and arthritis usually occur toward later middle age or the beginning of old age. Osteoporosis and osteomalacia (bone diseases) and slipped disk, deteriorating spine, ankylosing spondylitis and scoliosis (spine diseases) occur more frequently and at an earlier age.

It has often been stated that little or no calcium is deposited in the bones after the age of thirty-five. It would be ideal to load the body with calcium in the pre-teen and teen age years. Osteoporosis, contrary to popular belief, begins often as early as the onset of the teens or even younger. Autopsies performed on the bodies of young people have shown that arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) had already begun to take place. The abnormal material in the arteries consisted, in part, of calcium which was dissolving from the bones, due to drinking caffeinated and chocolate beverages, soft drinks containing phosphoric acid, and smoking.

The counter-balancing force preventing osteoporosis from becoming an obvious (apparent) disease in childhood or early adulthood was, and still is, the performance of physical exercise; this force diminishes with advancing age or physical impairment. Avoid being a “couch potato.” Following the ABC Diet throughout life, however, prevents both arteriosclerosis and osteoporosis. Once these occur to any degree, stronger nutritive measures must be employed.

During the 6 to 12 month period without junk food and with the improved nutrition of the ABC Diet and weight-bearing exercise, the body will begin to repair itself by manufacturing new bone and cartilage. This can be proven by utilizing comparative X-rays. Sufficient calcium and magnesium, in the forms of eating dark green, leafy vegetables or taking Cal Mag (500 mg of calcium and 250 mg of magnesium) tablets, plus Vitamin D, should also be taken. About 750 mg. of calcium, in divided dosage, along with a good multiple vitamin and mineral tablet, is needed daily to repair or maintain good bone density, but it should always be given with 375 mg. of magnesium.

Why should magnesium always be taken with calcium? Because there is a urinary excretion complex which the body follows in the ratio of 2 parts of calcium to 1 part of magnesium. If this ratio is not followed, by taking calcium only tablets, magnesium will be pulled out of various parts of the body to attempt to satisfy this complex. The more calcium taken without sufficient magnesium, the more damage results. A deficiency in magnesium can result in bladder stones, kidney stones or gallstones; digestive disorders; heartbeat irregularity; damage to nerves; or various kinds of mental illnesses such as depression, A.D.H.D., manic depressive state or schizophrenia. It is the main reason that adults should avoid drinking large amounts of milk and cheese, or taking calcium citrate, calcium gluconate, calcium lactate or oyster shell calcium carbonate preparations which do not contain sufficient magnesium to satisfy the ratio. Taking Cal Mag tablets, with the correct 2:1 ratio, helps to prevent magnesium deficiency.

Manganese, another mineral, taken in a daily divided dose of 180 to 650mg. is recommended to strengthen the ligaments of the spine and the disks. The higher dose should be given only while pains and spasms are present. Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol), from 200 to 800 I.U. a day, with butter or salad oil, also strengthens the back muscles and prevent leg spasms. Taking as much as 2,000 mg. of Vitamin C and half of a Cal Mag tablet three times a day has often proven effective in relieving back and leg spasms.

Currently in the Washington, D.C., area, there is a widespread problem with lead leaching out of the aging water pipes. Extremely high blood levels of lead in children’s blood have been found. The solution to the problem, according to water experts, is adding orthophosphates, a form of phosphorous, to the water supplies in order to lower the lead content.

What’s the problem with that? When phosphorous is taken in higher amounts, calcium absorption is decreased– less calcium enters the bones, resulting in the possibility of osteoporosis earlier than later in life, much as drinking soft drinks, which contain phosphoric acid, also results in diminished calcium absorption in the bones. The best answer is to replace all the deteriorating lead pipes and joints as quickly as possible, an extremely expensive but absolutely necessary step.

In the meantime, while the pipes and joints are being replaced, there are two items that can help to protect the body against lead. They are Vitamin C and calcium, both known for their detoxifying abilities. However, these two should not be taken at the same time because they are slightly antagonistic to each other, and calcium should never be taken without taking half as much magnesium with it.

The ideal situation would be for everyone to take a multiple vitamin tablet, with Vitamins A, B Complex, C and D with breakfast daily. An hour later, a half to one tablet of Cal Mag should be taken.

So when your doctor tells you to take some kind of calcium tablets to avoid osteoporosis, ask him (or her) whether you can take a good multiple vitamin and mineral tablet and a Cal Mag tablet instead, for better, safer results.

Discussion From an Independent Viewpoint

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

I had intended to discuss Osteoporosis, Diabetes, Mental Diseases and diseases affecting African Americans, beginning with this issue, but due to the upcoming elections, an issue far greater than these must be discussed– that of our Nation’s health care.

Both major parties are seeking to offer “newer and better health care programs,” but neither party mentions insuring the 45 million Americans who are presently without health coverage. This significant percentage, 1 in every 6.5 people, is denied adequate coverage, other than emergency rooms and “poor people’s clinics,” both of which treat the ailment, whereas treating the whole body would be a better way to go. Senior citizens are offered various drug card benefits. Those with cancer, in some cases, can receive reduced prices on expensive drugs.

There is a better way than all of these– teaching the population to avoid illness. Yes, it can be done. The old saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” is certainly true in this case.

How would I propose to teach people to avoid illness? In five steps:

Prepare a pamphlet that teaches the ABC Diet plus exercise and distribute it through the mail to every home in the United States.

Create television and radio programs that illustrate what food and drinks should be used, demonstrating how to prepare them, sort of like the food programs on television now.

Congress should pass legislation to forbid the payment of U.S.D.A. food stamps for the items on the “A” list (see Issue #2 for a complete list), those items which, although popular, cause physical and mental illnesses when taken into the body– coffee, tea, soft drinks, alcohol, artificial substances such as sweeteners, preservatives, flavoring and coloring agents, sport drinks, chocolate, white flour, sugar, fluoride tooth pastes and mouthwashes.

Teach the ABC Diet and exercise in each classroom of every school, providing a teacher’s guide on how to teach the subject.

Prepare a physician’s and a clinic pamphlet to teach patients how to follow the ABC Diet and encourage them to do so, in order to prevent future diseases. Pay the health care providers for such instruction, as they are being paid for treating illness now.

In the long run, by preventing illness, the need for Medicare, Medicaid and health care plans can be reduced significantly, providing affordable, universal health coverage and lowering taxes for everyone.

I hope that one or the other, maybe both, of the major political parties will adopt this plan to improve the Nation’s health. I see no other way out.

Discussion From an Independent Viewpoint

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

Just as sooner or later we are going to have to decide whether we are going to continue buying gas-guzzling SUVs OR gas-saving hybrids, before we run out of oil all over the world, so too we must decide what is more important, keeping big companies big, by letting them continue to manufacture unhealthy products, OR improving the nation’s health– your family and mine, by encouraging people to avoid these products. Simply put, more arthritis, diabetes, cancer, Crohn’s disease, Sickle Cell disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, OR improved health, resulting in less need for Medicare, Medicaid and reduced taxes. It is no coincidence that big manufacturers spend many millions of dollars in Washington every year to lobby for favorable legislation relating to their companies. This is disgraceful. If this is the kind of big business that has made America great, then maybe America should downscale to a degree, in behalf of its citizens.

You and I can bring about changes for the better. How? By educating people to choose healthy products and to reject those which cause them to develop premature ill health. Demand that your legislators re-examine the sources of their funding, OR vote them out of office. Don’t let them be influenced by those who manufacture garbage that makes us ill. We must choose to reject unhealthy stuff that passes as food at the checkout stand of your local food store. A law should be passed that food stamps may not be allowed to pay for any of the items in the “A” list of the ABC Diet (see ISSUE #2). This would be a step in the right direction toward making the public aware of what is good food and what is junk.

ARTHRITIS is an excellent example of a disease caused by eating and drinking junk.
Please pause to read this issue’s excerpt from my book, Chapter 5, which goes into some depth about Arthritis, Lupus, Bursitis and Gout. Unless you read Chapter 5 right now, you won’t have the slightest idea what I’m talking about in the next few paragraphs. [Click on “Home,” on “Read the Most Recent Book Excerpt,” and then on “Excerpt #3.”](I’ll wait.)

Now that you’ve read Chapter 5, we’ll continue on the subject. The pantothenic acid blood analysis indicates the state of our well-being. As you have just read in Chapter 5, the higher the pantothenic acid blood level, the greater the chance of not suffering from arthritis and the other “auto-immune” diseases. The reverse is also true. You have also learned that all the items in the “A” list of the ABC Diet lower the pantothenic acid level of the blood, insuring that if arthritis runs in your family, you’re bound to show symptoms at an even younger age than your ancestors did.

Why? Because the typical American diet has a lot more junk food in it than the diet which our parents and grandparents followed. Aspartame, BHA, BHT and “sport drinks” hadn’t been invented yet; artificial food dyes, flavoring agents, preserving agents and bleached, highly refined white flour were not used to the extent that they are now; fluorides may have naturally occurred in some water systems, but they were definitely not found in almost every tooth paste, mouthwash and dental treatment.

Caffeine consumption is extremely high in the United States, with 3/4 of the adult population drinking more than 4 cups of coffee a day. The average annual coffee consumption of the American adult is almost 27 gallons, or over 400 cups a year. Adding what teenagers and adults drink in tea and soft drinks of the most addictive substance on earth, you can readily understand the health problems we are having. The mere withdrawal of caffeine can cause symptoms of depression, fatigue, tremors, irritability, deprivation of deep sleep and vascular headaches.

In 1909, the average person consumed 87.5 pounds of sugars per year; today the average is over 160 pounds a year, or 50 teaspoonfuls per person per day. Soft drink consumption in 1970 was 24.3 gallons per person per year; today it is over 53 gallons, of which over 12 gallons are diet drinks.

Drugs were most certainly not used to the extent they are today. Aspirin was the chief moderate pain reliever up to the mid 1950s; it was mixed with phenacetin and caffeine during the Second World War “to enhance its effectiveness.” Phenacetin was banned in 1983 because of its toxicity to the kidneys and as a carcinogen. Illegal drugs, for the greater part of the population, were unavailable “on the street;” today they are readily available. Prescription drugs are used to treat diabetes, arthritis, pain, cardiovascular disease, mental illness, cancer and practically every other disease.

All of these items mentioned must be metabolized by the liver to detoxify them. In Issue #5, I listed the difficulty that liver enzymes have in detoxifying various foods, especially in the presence of an over-abundance of animal protein, typical of the average American diet.

Now, if eliminating the “A” items in the ABC Diet will help raise the pantothenic acid blood level to over 95 mg. per cent, and introducing royal jelly in honey and Vitamin C, can the symptoms of Arthritis be reversed, reduced or eliminated? My limited evidence shows that it can. Take the case of my mother who passed away this past April at the age of 98. When she was 75 years old, she had suffered for some time from the symptoms of arthritis, so badly that she had to take an anti-inflamatory agent called Feldene and a pain reliever called Darvocet N-65, an opioid narcotic analgesic. She continued to suffer in spite of taking them regularly.

It was then that I heard Mr. Whidden’s lecture about royal jelly and its effect on mitigating arthritis. I immediately advised her to take Whidden’s Royal Jelly in Honey and other supplements, eliminate all caffeine and reduce her animal protein intake. Within 3 to 6 months, she ceased taking both drugs and never had to take them again the rest of her life. The Herbeden’s nodes on her finger joints were greatly reduced in size. Her two brothers and two sisters all died in their 70s of arthritis, cancer and heart disease; she lived 23 years longer, in great measure, by following the ABC Diet. Her mind (and memory) remained keen to the very end. Last January, I played Scrabble with her– and she beat me, fair and square!

I have no doubt that, if conditions were the same in a large scale clinical study, the results would be the same. I invite those who have arthritis or other “auto-immune” diseases to follow what I have described, The ABC Diet with supplements and daily exercise.

ON HEALTH ISSUES
Discussion From an Independent Viewpoint

All opinions expressed in this Newsletter are mine alone, based on over twenty-five years’ experience in the Nutrition field. Those who would like to follow what is recommended here, do so at their own risk.

A.D.H.D. is a disease which has increased manifold in the last 50 years. Part of this increase has been due to better diagnostic procedures, but, by far, the main cause has been an increasingly poor diet. Here are some of the elements of the diet that have caused the illness: Greater consumption of
caffeine (in coffee, tea and soft drinks)– and now even in some bottled waters!;
chocolate;
milk products;
nicotine;
alcohol (beer, wine, whisky);
drugs (even Ritalin [generic name Methylphenidate], a drug used to treat A.D.H.D., can make the disease worse);
artificial coloring (most food products not in their natural state),
preserving (sodium nitrate and nitrite, calcium proprionate, sodium and potassium benzoate), flavoring (MSG, still found in many Chinese restaurant foods)
and sweetening agents (Nutrasweet, Equal, Sweet N’Low);
foods prepared with white flour (cake, cookies, white bread);
sugar (known to cause diabetes, cardiovascular, and mental diseases);
the combination of fluoride dental preparations and aluminum-containing anti-perspirant deodorants (A.D.H.D. may be the acute disease and Alzheimer’s the chronic form.)

The list of ingredients of every product consumed must be carefully examined to be sure that absolutely none of these agents is present.

Any attempt to mitigate the disorder must be done with the full cooperation of the patient, for merely reducing the consumption of these agents rarely demonstrates satisfactory results–they must be entirely eliminated from the lifestyle to achieve long-term liquidation of symptoms.

A.D.H.D. appears to be hereditary and occurs predominantly in males at a ratio of 3:1. Male siblings have a far greater tendency to show symptoms than their sisters, although females may also show symptoms in families with extremely poor diets. The condition is not limited to pre-teen and teenage males; more and more, their fathers also have symptoms.

About twenty-five years ago, Dr. Ben F. Feingold, a pediatric allergist, and his wife, Helen, published a book, The Feingold Cookbook for Hyperactive Children and Others with Problems Associated with Food Additives and Salicylates,. Random House, New York, 1979. The book was dedicated “to the many parents who, by sharing their success with other families, made valid the concept of dietary management.” I highly recommend the book to be purchased and perused, and I don’t feel that the publisher would mind if I were to quote a little further from it, in the interest of public betterment.

“The following fruits, vegetables and miscellaneous items contain salicylates and should be eliminated: Almonds, apples (also cider and cider vinegar), apricots, all berries, cherries, cloves, coffee, cucumbers and pickles, currants, grapes and raisins (also wine and wine vinegar), green peppers (also chillies), nectarines, oranges, peaches, plums and prunes, tangerines, all teas, tomatoes and oil of wintergreen.

“In addition, the following sundry items should be eliminated: Practically all pediatric medications and vitamins contain artificial colors and flavors; Vitamins added to fortify foods may contain BHT or BHA. This is especially true of Vitamin A. The BHT and BHA may not be disclosed on the label.

“Most over-the-counter medications contain aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) as well as artificial colors and flavors.
“All toothpastes and toothpowders.
“All mouthwashes, cough drops and lozenges.
“Perfumes and most aromatic sprays, for example, deodorizers, disinfectants and insecticides.
“All chewing gums contain BHT, and sugarless gum also contains synthetic flavors and, at times, colors.
[Finally, the book adds,] “Finger paints and play dough used by children at home, nursery school or kindergarten contain artificial coloring. This coloring is introduced into the mouth by hands and fingers contaminated with the color.”

Sounds pretty limiting, doesn’t it? What’s left to eat or touch? It appears, hardly anything. All is not lost, however, because there are fresh fruits and vegetables not listed that do not contain salicylates, BHA and BHT are no longer allowed in this country, many vitamin and mineral preparations (listed as hypoallergenic), do not contain yeast, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and preservatives. Furthermore, not every child (or adult) is that highly allergic to all these substances. Sometimes pork, wheat, corn and eggs can cause allergies.

How does one know which of these ingredients, between my list and their list, are causing the hyperactivity? The answer is: eliminate all of these substances for one or two weeks, and then slowly begin adding one of them, at a time, back into the lifestyle. When the patient begins to show hyperactivity, bingo! you’ve got the causative agent or agents. These must be eliminated for a year or more and then introduced again, if really desired, or permanently eliminated. Remember to delete them for the one or two week period though so you know which is the causative factor.

Don’t forget: Buy the book for the wonderful recipes and much more information than I could possibly have given you here.

Just before the same time that Dr. and Mrs. Feingold published their book, I recommended one of my hyperactive clients to eliminate the items on my list. Sure enough, within two weeks, the child brought home a note from her teacher, indicating the marked improvement in her behavior, and a bit of encouragement to keep doing what they had been doing to bring about this change.

Although the Feingolds brought no changes in the universal treatment of A.D.H.D., toward natural foods and away from drug therapy, maybe a quarter of a century later, people will begin to follow this therapy. I know it works.
